2023년 새해가 밝아오면서 저의 관심사가 딱 2가지.
저는 축구와 건축에 빠져서 엄청나게 많은 정보를 얻게 되어요.
일단 축구는 원래 좋아했는데 막 챙겨보는건 아니였고
월드컵이 다가오면 전 경기를 다 챙겨보는 열정정도랄까.
4년에 한번 찾아오는 관심이었어요.
근데 작년 월드컵이 끝난후 오타쿠 기질이 발동되어 그렇게 축구를 보게 되었달까요.
집에 스포티비2를 결제할뻔 했다지요.
프리미어 리그와 라리가, 리그앙, 분데스리가 등 유럽 축구를 열심히
밤새 보았고 내가 응원하는 구단의 축구경기쯤은 밤에 알람하여 볼 정도의
훌리건이 되어 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
여튼 한국선수들중 유럽리그에서 뛰는 선수들의 구단은 모두 챙겨볼 정도였고
그 덕에 각 나라의 리그들과 그들만의 축구스타일 그리고
내가 몰랐던 선수들까지 알게되었어요,.
국뽕 티비까지 섭렵하며 거의 3개월 열심히 팠어요 ㅋㅋㅋ
제 주변인들이 또 나왔다 저 기질..이러면서 어찌나 웃겨하던지.
그에 맞물려 건축에 빠져있었어요.
저의 관심사는 정말 종잡을 수 없어요.
왜 갑자기 건축? 이러시는데 사실 저는 예술의 전 영역에 관심이 많아요.
미술도 음악도 극도 무용도 건축까지 세계사 등
저의 관심사가 꼬리에 꼬리를 물고 있죠.
그 중 이번에는 건축이 된거죠.
유현준 교수님의 어쩌다 어른과 벌거벗은 세계사 등 인문학 강의를 듣다가
나의 스타일의 강의를 발견하고 교수님의 유튜브를 팔로우 하면서
밤낮으로 봤어요.
건축학이 이리 재미있는 거였는지 몰랐죠.
그리고 건축도면을 보는게 재미있는 줄알았으면 더 어렸을때 공부해둘걸..
여튼 어찌저찌 르코르뷔지에, 리차드 마이어, 안도다다오, 이타미준 등
관심있는 건축과 그 건물을 설계한 건축가를 공부하게 되었지요.
참 흥미롭고 이 건축에서 또한 다른 세계관을 보게 되었죠.
흥미로운 지식들 그리고 시야들을 조금씩 맛보게 되고 저의 관심사와 비슷한 사촌언니와
국내 건축물들을 시간날때마다 보러다니기로 하고 첫 관람이 이곳이었어요.
아이들 방학기간이었던 어느날.
갑자기 사촌언니의 문자.
나와 여기좀 가야겠다 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
오늘 시간되니..
아이들 데리고 책한권씩 손에 들려서 차를 몰아 이곳으로 왔는데
평일 오전이었고, 거의 오픈런이었어요.
첫 이 건축을 본 저는 이런 곳이 한국에도 있구나 싶었고,
너무 궁금했어요.
안에 보니 카페였고 이곳에 온 진짜 이유는
건축물 감상때문이었죠 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
단층의 카페인데 건물이 하나로 이어져있는 우주선 같은 공간이었어요.
너무 특이한데 안에서 바라보는 경치가 정말 예술이었죠.
정말 힐링의 공간이네요.
일단 감상은 접어두고 커피와 브런치를 시키기로..
근데 뭐죠? 이곳.....
베이커리도 커피도 예사롭지 않네요?
평일 어느날 갑자기 저를 이곳으로 데리고 온 언니는
브런치를 사기로 했어요.
의사언니 이럴때 쓰는거죠 ㅋㅋㅋ
먹고싶은거 다 시키는 플랙스...
일단 기본 베이커리에서 선택장애가..
냄새부터 자극이 엄청나네요
커피를 오더하고 저는 공간을 둘러오는데 간간히 기둥이 보이고 층고가
낮았다가 높았다가 하는 이 건물이 원으로 이어져있는 건축물이란 것에 대해
너무나 감탄을..
이런 곳이 카페라는것에도 놀랐지만..
이곳 주인이 예사롭지 않다고 느껴졌네요.
일단은 가장 힐링이 될 만한 테이블을 하나 자리잡고 아이들에게 야외에서 놀으라고
이야기 한 후 언니와 대화를 했어요.
여기 무엇인지 알고 온건지.
도대체 이곳의 히스토리가 궁금하다고요.
이름하여 아유 스페이스.
진짜 우주에 온것 같은 그런 기분이었어요.
마침 오더벨이 울리고 언니가 커피를 가지러간사이 둘러보는데
커피가지러 간사람이 안와요.
보니까 어떤 여자분과 대화를 하고 있는데 안오네요.
????
커피를 받으러간사람이 안오니 궁금하잖아요?
기다렸는데 한참후에 식은 커피를 가지고 온 언니가 이야기한게
이야기 나눈 여자분이 이 건물주 라는 거죠.
이 건물에 대해 물어보다가 건축물에 진가를 알아봐 주는 우리에게
깊은 감사와함께 이곳에 대한 도슨트 역할을 해주겠다는 이야기를 했다는 것이었죠.
와...
집에가긴 글렀네 ㅋㅋㅋ
근데 너무 궁금해..
일단 아침도 스킵하고 온 아이들을 불러서
먹였어요.
든든히 먹고 저 정원을 뛰어놀아라..
가장 성공한 건축물은 아이들이 그 공간을 좋아하냐에 따라
나뉘어 진다고 이야기한 건축가가 있었는데.
그의 이론대로라면 이곳은 성공인거죠.
이 애들은 정말 먹을때 빼고는 카페안으로 들어오지 않았거든요 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
아니 근데 건축물도 훌륭한데 이 퀄리티 뭐죠?
왜 베이커리 맛있는거죠?
왜 커피가 저세상 맛인거죠?

호텔 파티쉐가 만든 베이커리 맛인거죠?
아....
여기 뭐야 대체 ㅠㅠ
그러다가 간 화장실도 범상치 않은 ㅋㅋㅋ
일단 이곳은 인테리어도 그렇지만 방향제 냄새도 굉장히 색달랐어요.
인위적인 향이 아닌 자연스러운 향.
후레쉬라는 단어가 자연스럽게 떠오르는 향.
화장실에도 그랬어요.
그렇게 브런치를 먹고 도슨트 역할을 해주시는 사장님을 기다렸어요.
원래는 2시까지 오려고 계획을 했는데
일단 스케줄을 조정을 했어요.
여기까지 와서 예상치 못한 기회가 생겼으니
체험을 해봐야 겠죠.
여자 사장님의 남편분을 소개받아 이 곳을 구석구석 소개를 받았죠.
우선 옥상으로가서 왜 이곳이 선택되어 진 건지.
이 곳은 어떤한 계기로 카페가 된건지 건축가가 누구인지
상세하게 이야기를 듣게 되었죠.
이 곳에서 본 대지는 완전 느낌이 다르고 왜 단차가 다른 느낌으로
지어졌는지 알게되었어요.
여기는 원래 롯데 家에서 소유한 개인 집이었고 사모님의 소유였다죠.
이 아유스페이스 건축가는 우리나라 최고의 건축가로 꼽히는 조병수 선생님의 작품이었죠.

노출 콩크리트를 보면서 안도 다다오가 생각이 났지만
건축주인 선생님은 사실 안도 다다오의 안티셨더라는 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
건축물만 덩그러니 있는 카페가 아니구요.
별장 전체를 카페와 독채로 사용을 하셨어요.
독채는 각종 문화적 활동들을 계획하고 그 체험이나 전시를 볼 수 있는 공간으로 만드실거라고
소개를 받았는데 지금은 그 별채의 공사가 끝났으려나요?
궁금해서 한 더 가보고 싶은 곳이예요.
야외 정원을 한번 둘러보았어요.
북한강을 끼고 있는 곳이라 가까이에서 강을 볼 수 있는 메리트가 있어요.
근데 겨울에는 추워서 야외는 이용하기 힘들어요 ㅠㅠ
그래도 아이들은 즐겁죠.
이런곳이 있다는 것도 야외 정원을 가지고 있는 카페도 보기 드물잖아요.
아이들이 뛰어놀수 있는 공간이 넓게 있는것도 너무 좋아보이고
그 관리또한 너무 잘되어있어서 좋았어요.
야외에는 날씨가 따뜻해지면 공연또한 계획하신다고 하셨어요.
야외 벤치와 나무 타일 하나까지 모두 건축주의 세심한 관심과 생각
철학이 묻어있었어요.
이곳을 계획한 분들과 이야기하면서 드는 생각은 일반 사람들과 확실히
달랐고, 추구하는 목표와 목적또한 달랐어요.
해외 유명 미술관 큐레이터 출신의 여 사장님과
대한민국 예술계 중심에 계신 남 사장님 이 두분의 만남.
그리고 그분들이 직접 도슨트 해주신 귀한 시간이 정말 좋았었네요.
그냥 수많은 커피마시러 온 고객중 한명일수있는 사람이었는데
진가를 알고 일부로 찾아와준 고객에 대한 고마움을 직접 이렇게
표현해주신 사장님 감사드려요 ㅎㅎ
사계절을 뚜렷하게 그리고 완전 다르게 느낄수 있는 카페 아유 스페이스.

☕ A Visit to Ayu Space: A Café, A Work of Art, and an Unexpected Experience
It's funny how I'm writing this post after two seasons have already passed—again.
Please forgive my little blogging hiatus. 😅
As 2023 rolled in, my attention shifted toward two very specific interests:
soccer and architecture.
I’ve always liked soccer, but I wasn’t the type to follow every single match. My enthusiasm typically spiked during the World Cup.
But after the last World Cup ended, my inner fangirl—or should I say, soccer otaku—was fully activated.
I came this close to subscribing to SPOTV2 just to follow all the European leagues: Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Bundesliga... you name it. I even set alarms to catch matches in the middle of the night. 😂 I wasn’t just watching for fun—I began studying each team, each country's style of play, and even the lesser-known players.
And while that was happening, something else caught my attention: architecture.
When Curiosity Becomes Obsession
My interests are honestly all over the place.
Art, music, theater, dance, architecture, even world history—everything connects. And this time, architecture was my rabbit hole.
It all started with watching lectures by Professor Hyunjoon Yoo on YouTube. I found his talks so fascinating that I binged them day and night. I had no idea architecture could be this interesting. I started reading architectural plans and studying architects like Le Corbusier, Richard Meier, Tadao Ando, and Jun Itami.
The more I explored, the more I wanted to see the spaces they designed.
So I made a little pact with my cousin—who’s equally curious—to go visit beautiful, meaningful buildings around Korea whenever we had free time.
Enter: Ayu Space, a Hidden Gem in Namyangju
One winter morning during the kids' vacation, I got a sudden text from my cousin:
“We need to go here. Today. You free?”
So off we went, kids in tow, each holding a book in hand. We headed toward Ayu Space in Namyangju. It was a weekday morning, so we basically did an open-run without even meaning to.
At first glance, I couldn’t believe a place like this existed in Korea.
From the outside, it looked like a sleek, single-story spaceship.
It turns out—yes, it’s a café, but we were really there for the architecture.
Space, Light, and Atmosphere
The café is circular in structure, with curved hallways, varying ceiling heights, and subtle concrete columns that add to the visual rhythm. I was blown away. Every view, every angle—from inside looking out—was pure art.
We chose a cozy table with the best view, let the kids play outside, and ordered coffee and brunch. But as soon as I stepped into the bakery area… wow. This wasn’t just a regular café.
The aroma. The presentation. The menu. Everything screamed high-quality.
My cousin—being the amazing “Doctor Aunt” that she is—treated us to everything we wanted. Flex mode: on. 😎
And Then, the Real Surprise
While waiting for the coffee, my cousin started chatting with a woman inside. Turns out, this woman was the owner of the building.
She was so surprised that we recognized and appreciated the architectural design that she offered to give us a private docent tour of the entire place. Um… YES.
We had originally planned to leave by 2PM, but of course we canceled all plans and stayed.
We were introduced to her husband, who walked us through every corner of the space—starting from the rooftop, where he explained the choice of location, the land structure, the gradient differences, and the history of how this space became what it is today.
Designed by the Best
Originally, this land belonged to the Lotte family and was a private residence. The building was designed by none other than Cho Byoungsoo, one of Korea’s most respected architects.
The exposed concrete made me think of Tadao Ando, but ironically, the owner mentioned that Cho is actually anti-Ando. 😂
Ayu Space isn’t just a standalone building—it’s a full complex. They’re even planning to use the detached building on the property for cultural events and exhibitions. Not sure if it’s open yet, but I’m definitely planning to return.
Kids, Coffee, and Concrete
The kids had a blast.
And in the words of one famous architect, “The success of a space can be judged by how children respond to it.”
Well, my kids loved it. They only came inside to eat and spent the rest of their time running freely around the garden.
And let’s not forget: the coffee and baked goods were insanely good.
Apparently, their baker trained in France and uses imported premium ingredients.
Even the coffee is house-roasted by the owner himself, who’s deeply into roasting.
Even the bathroom had a fresh, natural scent—none of that artificial stuff. The attention to detail here is just on another level.
The Philosophy Behind the Space
We spent the afternoon soaking in stories about design, history, and intentional living.
The couple who owns the place—an art curator from a major global museum and a leading figure in Korea’s art scene—shared their vision for the space.
Their values, goals, and philosophies were clearly reflected in every inch of Ayu Space. You could feel it in the layout, the furniture, even the wooden tiles outdoors. They even plan to hold performances once the weather gets warmer.
It was one of those moments where you realize:
These people are operating on an entirely different wavelength.
And we were lucky enough to be there, experiencing it all—not just as customers, but as curious visitors who genuinely wanted to understand the heart behind the design.
✨ A Space Worth Visiting
If you’re into architecture—or simply want to explore something unique—Ayu Space is a must-visit.
They’re planning to launch a formal docent program soon, so definitely ask about it if you go.
And pro tip? Go on a weekday. It’s quieter, and the experience is richer.
